Red Cross Worker
In addition to the mysteries surrounding the food vending carts, I remember hearing many different stories of other strange and unexplainable occurrences. The Landfill, with all its lost and fallen civilians as well as the city workers who also perished, was a vulnerable and spiritually exposed place. It never dawned on me that of all the different stories and rumors at the Landfill we would also hear “ghost stories.”
There is so much to speak of regarding my memories of the six months I spent at the Landfill. So many years have passed, and I am finally able to put together all those memories. When I began to piece together my thoughts and experiences and combine them with all the information that Maria, my co-author, and I collected, I never expected someone to recount what he believed to be a paranormal experience which triggered a memory I had long forgotten.
The largest movable crime scene in American history had ghost stories to tell. I had encountered my own odd experiences, and crime scene detectives who worked the Landfill had their own stories to share. One of those was Frank Tegano, a retired New York City Police Department crime scene detective. I had known Frank for some time, and we had worked together in the late 80s at the 120th Precinct in Staten Island, New York.
Frank spent his years as a detective in the Crime Scene Unit and was temporarily assigned to the 9/11 Staten Island Landfill World Trade Center Recovery Site. His main assignment was to help with the identification and recovery of the body parts that were found at the sifting locations. He worked with a forensics team and highly trained anthropologists to identify human remains.
At one point in an interview about his recollections, Frank asked if I had ever heard about the Red Cross worker. As he asked that question, he turned the key to a vault of memories that I had completely put away. The memories all began to come back. “The Red Cross worker who would walk around and serve sandwiches and coffee by the sifting machines?” Before he could even finish his question, I responded yes. This was a memory that I had left dormant for years. Suddenly I was able to explain that one random day I was at the tent where the daily assignments were handed out and I overheard two police officers talking. One of them was asking the other if he saw the Red Cross worker walking with a tray of sandwiches. He explained that the woman headed toward him, and he didn’t think anything of it. Then he had looked around to see if there were other Red Cross workers with her and when he looked back at her, she vanished. He kept repeating to his friend that she was gone, that she just vanished into thin air.
I told Frank that I had forgotten all about that woman wandering the site. I remembered that three other detectives from the Bronx reported seeing a woman with sandwiches over by the large sifter.
